Pelicans pile on the points

15 August 2018
in Local News

The Lakes Entrance Basketball Association Pelicans took seven teams to Morwell for the final tournament of the season recently.

The under 10 girls were in A grade and played extremely hard in every game they played, but they came up against some very tough competition and were unable to record a win for the weekend.

The future looks bright for the girls and the club is hopeful the team can stay together for the next season.

The under 10 boys were also in A grade and went well getting wins against two Heyfield sides.

They were beaten in the other two games by Leongatha and Maffra, but put up a good fight in both games.

The under 12 girls came up against some very good sides losing to Sale, Churchill and Moe. They were able to get a draw against Morwell and continued to improve with every game they played.

The under 14 boys had a game against Churchill first up, which they lost by 13. Next they played Sale and won 41-31 and lost to Orbost in the last game of the round robin and the first round of the finals.

The under 16s also played in A grade and played some of their best basketball of the season taking down Moe A, Churchill, Traralgon B, Morwell and Moe B., setting up a grand final match up against a very strong Traralgon A side.
The grand final was a fast-paced game with the Pelicans going down to the T-Birds in their first loss of the tournament.

The under 12s took two teams – Black (top age players) and Teal (bottom age players) – both teams playing well throughout the tournament with the Black team winning games against Bairnsdale, Moe and Morwell in the regular season.

The Teal team also did well getting wins against Bairnsdale and Morwell, a draw against Mirboo North and one loss to Traralgon, setting up a finals match against their big brother in the Pelicans Black team.

The Black team proved a little too strong, winning 58-41, advancing through to the grand final against Traralgon.

The young Pelicans went out of the blocks quickly, putting points on the board and playing great team defence.

They controlled the game for the first half and went into the break with a nice lead.

In the second half the Pelicans continued to score while keeping the T-Birds at bay. They ran out winners 39-29 with Cooper Di Fiore named most valuable player.
