Men’s Health Week kicks off next week, turning a much-needed spotlight on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of men and boys across Australia.
Running from June 15 to 21, the annual initiative aims to spark critical conversations, break down societal stigmas, and encourage proactive health habits.
This year’s campaign focuses on the theme of “Building Healthy Environments for Men and Boys”, examining how environments — including workplaces, sporting clubs and regional communities — shape male health outcomes.
Statistically, Australian men face shorter life expectancies than women and suffer from higher rates of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and bowel cancer. Furthermore, men account for approximately three-quarters of all suicide deaths in Australia, a statistic that regional health providers are desperate to change.
Local health professionals note that men living in regional areas like East Gippsland often face unique challenges, including geographic isolation, limited access to specialists and a traditional “she’ll be right” attitude that can delay vital medical check-ups.
Men’s Health Week serves as a timely reminder for men of all ages to schedule routine health screenings, speak openly about mental health struggles, and support one another in making positive lifestyle changes. Throughout the week, community health organisations across the region will host a variety of events, from free health checks to social gatherings, aimed at making health information accessible and actionable.
