There’s plenty of positivity in the fishing scene at present, with some outstanding catches reported across the region in recent weeks.
Lakes Entrance: Fishing has been firing, with trevally biting well on prawn, as well as small soft plastics and lightly weighted prawn imitations. Off the beach, salmon are the main target—use metal lures with long casts and a steady retrieve, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon.
Lake Tyers: Bream are taking prawns on lightly weighted rigs around structure and drop-offs. Flathead are responding to soft plastics and diving minnows, while tailor are chasing pilchards and metal lures.
Metung: Whiting and flathead are active around Chinamans Creek, the town jetties and boardwalk, with local prawns and pipis the preferred bait. Bream are taking crabs, mussels and prawns, while the odd tailor is appearing along the back beaches.
Mitchell River: From The Cut through to the Port of Bairnsdale, flathead are showing in good numbers, taking local prawns, live sandworm and soft plastics. Bream are also active on cut crab and fresh prawns.
Nicholson River: Bream are being caught from the river mouth to the highway bridge on live sandworm, prawns, soft plastics and blue bait. Drifting the flats or slow-trolling plastics has been effective.
Tambo River: Mulloway are active between the two bridges, taking lures and blue bait. Closer to the mouth, bream are feeding on sandworm, prawns and hard-body lures.
Paynesville: Jetties are producing quality bream and the occasional mulloway, with live sandworm the standout bait. Estuary perch are also being caught on soft plastics.
Hollands Landing: A mixed bag of bream, flathead and occasional mulloway are on offer, with prawns and sandworm working well. Prawn activity remains strong towards Loch Sport, especially at night.
Marlo: Bream and luderick are active around Second Island, while the Brodribb River is producing estuary perch. Offshore, gummies and flathead are being taken on blue bait and fresh fillets.
Bemm River: With the entrance open, salmon and tailor are active off the beach and in deeper channels. Flathead and bream are also present.
Mallacoota: Squid, flathead, snapper and gummy are being caught on fresh baits, with kingfish also active. Soft plastics and prawns are working well for bream and flathead.
High Country: The Mitta Mitta, Gibbo and Ovens rivers are producing solid trout on hard-body lures. Anglers are advised to check weather conditions before heading out.
