Despite blustery winds and cool coastal conditions, Lakes Entrance’s Main Beach was buzzing with colour, competition and community spirit last Saturday as the town hosted the 11th annual Lakes Entrance Beach Netball tournament.
Part of the Lakes Entrance Netball Association’s popular summer program, the event drew teams from across the district for a day that balanced fierce on-court competition with a relaxed, social atmosphere by the sea.
Crowds were treated to fast-paced action on the sand, with the Redleg Legends from Bairnsdale emerging as this year’s champions after a strong grand final performance against Philipson’s Heat Waves, who finished runners-up.
Beyond the results, the tournament highlighted the growing appeal of beach netball in the region. In a move aimed firmly at the future of the sport, organisers added a junior exhibition match to the program, giving young players the chance to showcase their skills on the beach and in front of a supportive crowd.
Lakes Entrance Netball Association officials said the junior match was a standout addition and confirmed plans are already under way to expand junior beach netball events next summer.
Organisers also acknowledged the strong backing of local businesses and supporters who helped make the day a success, including Lakes Entrance Aqua Park and the Berwick Netball Association.
With competitive netball, junior talent on display and the unmistakable backdrop of the Lakes Entrance foreshore, the annual beach tournament once again proved why it remains a highlight of the local summer sporting calendar.
