Despite soaring temperatures, the Lakes Entrance Golf Club hosted three busy days of medley stableford competition last week, with strong fields and the deciding of two monthly medals.
Wednesday’s event attracted 42 players, with visiting Churchill Monash Golf Club member Mark Answerth producing a standout performance as the heat began to build. Answerth finished with 41 points to claim overall honours and take out “A” grade. Patty Smith won “B” grade with 37 points, which also secured her the ladies’ monthly medal.
Numbers dipped on Thursday as temperatures climbed sharply, but 84 players still took to the course in oppressive conditions. The day belonged to classy left-hander Mark Jackson, who topped the field with an excellent 41 points to win “B” grade overall.
Returning to town, Adam Henwood struck the ball powerfully to claim “A” grade with 36 points, playing off a plus-three handicap. Bernie Hoppe (38 points) and Gary Vick (39 points) rounded out the grade winners in “C” and “D” grade respectively.
Conditions eased slightly by Saturday, encouraging a strong turnout of 124 players for the men’s monthly medal. The day produced some outstanding scores, led by “D” grade golfer
Jackson Dear, who fired a sensational 44 points off his 28 handicap to claim the medal.
Perennial club champion Renee Percival was the winner in “A” grade with 36 points, playing off a handicap of seven. The middle grades were dominated by two of the club’s younger members, with Hunter Douglass (38 points) winning “B” grade and Mitchell Naylor taking out “C” grade with an impressive 43 points — a score that would usually be enough to claim overall honours.
There were smiles all round for Dave Dalrymple, who snared an eagle during his round, while Henwood again impressed, carding a fine 71 off the stick.
