Lakes Entrance Croquet Club is celebrating back-to-back
Gippsland Croquet Association pennant titles.
Up early at 6.10am last week, five members of the Lakes Entrance division one pennant team headed to the Traralgon croquet courts to take on Drouin.
The Gippsland Croquet Association runs its pennant season between September and December, with two sections — East Gippsland and West Gippsland.
The winners of each section meet in a final on a neutral set of courts.
The Lakes 1 team included Corry Schreuders, Julie Drummond, David Barrett and Rhonda Smith, with Neil Robbins as
team emergency.
After Barrett was unable to complete the season, the winning team consisted of Schreuders, Drummond, Smith and Robbins.
The match began with four level-play singles games, followed by four more, ensuring all players competed in two singles matches.
At the end of the singles, Lakes 1 had won five games to
Drouin’s three.
Two handicap doubles games before lunch saw Lakes 1 take both contests, moving the progressive score to seven games to three.
The afternoon session featured four doubles games, with Lakes 1 and Drouin each taking two games.
All matches were closely fought and played in good spirits.
The final result saw Lakes 1 win nine games to five, with the hoop difference between the teams a mere single hoop.
Lakes 1 enjoyed a triumphant season and finals victory, while Lakes 2, led by Alan Drayton and supported by Lynley Mitchell, Su Robbins, Edwin Benson and Helen Rasmussen, also competed.
The team faced a challenging season, but Robbins, Benson and Rasmussen gained valuable experience.
The club will hold its end-of-year celebrations this week, but play will continue throughout the festive season.
Regular play days are Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings, with Friday afternoon twilight social sessions.
