East Gippsland’s Lakes area is home to at least half of Victoria’s White-bellied Sea Eagle population, making it a vital stronghold for the species.
A talk at Metung Yacht Club on Thursday December 11, from 6-7pm, will explore the life of these iconic raptors, highlighting decades of monitoring and research.
Since 1978, DEECA and its predecessor agencies have tracked the health of the population, with BirdLife East Gippsland volunteers undertaking the latest
fieldwork during the 2023–24 and
2024–25 seasons.
This most recent survey recorded 43 nest sites, with 35 successfully rearing chicks through to fledging.
The data contribute to the largest and longest-running study of White-bellied Sea Eagles globally.
Presenter Derek Russell will take audiences through a typical breeding season and discuss the ongoing health of the population, offering insight into the remarkable conservation work taking place in
East Gippsland.
