Dear Editor,- Gippsland Critical Minerals’ claim that their mine will bring much-needed stimulus to Bairnsdale and the region’s economy needs to be seriously questioned rather than simply accepted without challenging its veracity.
Remember that behind the beguiling promises and claims of sincerity from many mining companies hoping to win acceptance for their projects, the aim of these companies is firstly to get approval and then to make generous profits for themselves and their shareholders.
They are not concerned if they damage the environment, destroy the lives of hard working farmers or harm any existing sustainable industries.
And there is no guarantee that they are the companies you will be dealing with in the future. If they sell their mine it could be to an international organisation and its workforce.
It is important to realise that GCM holds Retention License RL 2025 at Mossiface. Also the company Mars Mines Ltd has an Exploration Licence EL008101 on the other side of the highway, from Bengworden to Hillside.
If GCM’s Fingerboards mine is approved it is very likely to open the floodgates and mines will be developed in these areas too, making Bairnsdale a true mining hub, a centre for mining activity.
Is this what the many people living here really want as the future for their home town?
Yours etc.,
A.M.S. Michael, Bairnsdale
