Lakes Entrance Fire Brigade invited residents and visitors to attend its ‘Get Ready’ Community Open Day last Saturday, an event focused on bushfire preparedness, community engagement and general fire safety awareness.
Individuals and families came along to meet the volunteer firefighters who serve the Lakes Entrance community. The open day provided an opportunity for people to learn first-hand about the brigade’s vital role in bushfire response and to gain practical advice on preparing for the summer fire season.
There were live demonstrations conducted by brigade members, showcasing the operation of the fire trucks and equipment, including fire extinguisher demonstrations and a road rescue scenario. Children and adults were invited to explore the vehicles and ask questions.
Several ‘Junior firefighters’ donned uniforms and miniature helmets to try out their firefighting skills.
Information was available throughout the day to guide residents on creating and maintaining bushfire survival plans, clearing properties of potential fire hazards, and understanding local fire danger ratings. Brigade members fielded questions from attendees about everything from evacuation routes to the use of emergency alert apps.
A sausage sizzle was a popular feature and kept everyone well-fed.
Brigade Captain Phil Loukes was pleased with the strong turnout.
“It’s fantastic to see so many people take the time to learn about fire safety and to meet the team. Preparing early and knowing what to do can make all the difference when fire season arrives,” he said.
By the end of the day, more than 100 people had taken part, leaving with a better understanding of bushfire preparedness and a renewed appreciation for the volunteers who protect our community.
The success of the ‘Get Ready’ Community Open Day reaffirmed the importance of local engagement in building a safer, more resilient community.
Residents who missed the event are encouraged to visit the CFA website for resources and to stay alert to local fire conditions as the warmer months approach.
The Fire Danger Period in East Gippsland begins on Monday, October 27.
