The Albanese and State Governments are delivering smoother and safer journeys around Lakes Entrance and Kalimna as upgrades to a key intersection along the Princes Highway get underway.
Sections of Kalimna Path will be reconstructed and surfaced, with safety barriers, pedestrian fencing and drainage also being upgraded as part of the works.
Concrete medians and two raised safety platforms will be installed to slow vehicles down where pedestrians
are crossing.
New lighting will be installed and the current pedestrian refuge will be upgraded, which will improve safety for all
roads users.
The Princes Highway at the intersection of Lookout Road and Hotel Road will also have the painted centre islands replaced.
The works totalling nearly $2 million have been funded by both governments, with the Albanese Government investing $1.58 million and the State Government contributing nearly $400,000 towards the project.
The improved access for pedestrians will promote active transport for the local community and for visitors to the area.
Works are expected to be completed by the end of the year – weather permitting.
Notice on any further traffic changes as the project progresses will be provided to the local community.
Acting Federal Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Minister Julie Collins said the government was providing better and safer links for all roads users so that everyone can enjoy the scenic lookouts on the southern side of the Princes Highway in Kalimna.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne said safety was at the forefront of the improvements.
“By building a concrete refuge and raised safety platforms on the Princes Highway, we’re improving safety for pedestrians wishing to cross the highway,” she said.
Victorian senator Raff Ciccone said many people used Kalimna Path as pedestrian access across the North Arm between Lakes Entrance and Kalimna. “These improvements are making it safer for them to do so,”
he said.
Member for Eastern Victoria Tom McIntosh said the state and federal governments were working together to deliver important works for Gippsland.
“The Albanese and Allan Labor Governments are working together to deliver these important works for Gippsland – making roads safer, smoother and more enjoyable for locals and visitors alike,” he said.
