Exciting for Mt Hotham Alpine Resort this season is the opening of the new Hotham Hub Snowplay Activity Centre.
The bespoke Hotham Hub is located at Bus Stop 12 at Wire Plain on the south side of the Hotham Village and features a public day shelter, café, information desk and the new Hoys Rentals Shop.
Hoys have snow clothing, snow walk boots and toboggans for hire as well as a great range of snow accessories for sale.
Hoys also have cross country (Nordic) skis and snowshoes for hire so you can get out on the groomed trails and enjoy the picturesque alpine landscape.
You’ll need to pre-purchase your Hotham Resort Entry pass for your car and prebook your toboggan 50 minute session (free).
The Wire Plain dedicated toboggan slope is designed with kids (and kids at heart) in mind, so grab a sled and get sliding.
Hoys built a new ski shop in the Main Street (Great Alpine Road) in Omeo in 2022 and also operate ski shops in Dinner Plain, Mt Hotham and Harrietville.
For 40 years, Hoys have supported guests with a mobile chain fitting service on the Great Alpine Road between Harrietville and Mt Hotham.
The Hoy name enjoys a reputation of offering quality snow rental equipment and exceptional local service.
2025 marks 91 years of the Hoy family snow business.
The Hoys Skis story began in the 1930s, when Eric (mechanic) and Edith (journalist) Hoy were avid skiers and started transporting guests between Wangaratta up the Ovens Valley through to Mt St Bernard and beyond.
They would drive as far as the snow would allow, and guests would have to continue on foot from there.
Eric was keen to develop over snow transport and trialled all manor of vehicles including an ex-army Blitz truck.
While developing their passenger business between Wangaratta and Mt Hotham, in the early 50s they bought the Gold Mine Managers house (built in 1889) in Harrietville.
The site, renamed The Bon Accord, was expanded to accommodate 180 school students with many in Victoria experiencing their snow trips through Hoys.
Over the next 50 or so years, various members of the Hoys family managed this accommodation, assisting skiers, hikers
and visitors making their way to the mountains.
By the 80s the next generation banded together and bought the Hotham Chalet which the Hoys operated for about 20 years.
Meanwhile the coach business continued to bring a generation of Victorians to the mountains, operating the daily coach services between Wangaratta train and Harrietville and beyond during winter.
By the early 2000s, the accommodation and travel businesses were sold – the next generation continued developing the snow hire equipment side of the family business.
