Laughing out loud — or LOLing, as the younger generation might say — is a regular part of volunteering, especially when you’re
working with your friends to help others.
That’s been the experience for a group of grade six students from St Brendan’s Primary School in Lakes Entrance, who are helping with Meals on Wheels deliveries as part of their Rotary Junior Community Award.
The students — Sadie Williams, Millie Stewart, Isla Behan and Lacey Lee — are among Gippsland Lakes Complete Health’s (GLCH) youngest volunteers.
They’ve been helping on local delivery rounds, bringing not just meals but plenty of smiles to older residents.
“We loved seeing how surprised the elderly were to see us helping,” Sadie said.
“It’s easy to do in a team and you’ll be surprised at how fun it is. Plus, it earns you bragging rights. LOL.”
GLCH’s volunteer engagement officer Karren Hackling said the organisation proudly supports volunteers of
all ages — from 10 to 92
years old.
“It’s all about giving back,” she said.
“While most of our volunteers are retirees, we’re thrilled to see younger people stepping up. Whether you’re in primary school, at university, or taking a
gap year, there’s a place for you here.”
