Lakes Entrance Golf Club has broken a 31-year drought, defeating Sale in the division one Golf East Gippsland men’s pennant final last Sunday at the South Pines Golf Club.
Lakes went in as the underdog against the defending champion, who was previously unbeaten for
the campaign.
Play was competitive and the tension high, as you would expect with local golf bragging rights up for grabs.
But it was Lakes who performed best on the day, scoring a sensational 4-1 win, the
club’s first premier division pennant since
1994 secured.
Rob Donaldson was the only winner for Sale defeating Dean Barelli four and two, as Stuart Yates (one up), Mick McManus (two up), Dean Grining (four and two) and the
big hitting Brett Stokes (four and three) all reigned supreme.
Club president David Smythe was delighted with the piece of history.
“The guys had a great season and peaked on the day,” he said.
“An outstanding effort by the team and Jamie Coates who played throughout the season, it’s their own little piece of history now.”
South Pines Golf Club was successful in division two and will be promoted to division one in 2026 at
the expense of the Orbost Golf Club who will be relegated to division two.
