East Gippsland Shire Council is taking action to remove wheel stops sited near the Coast Guard building and the Slipway in Lakes Entrance.
There has been concern from the Lakes Entrance public about the tripping hazard they have been causing over many years since their installation, when the new Esplanade streetscape was constructed.
Locals and visitors alike have been injured after failing to see the concrete barriers which blend in with the asphalt and pavement. There had been calls for either removal or painting them in a bright colour.
Only last week a tourist from New South Wales suffered facial and wrist injuries in such a fall.
“These wheel stops, low barriers that stop vehicles overshooting parking spaces, were not installed by council, however council has been in discussions with the Department of Transport and Planning for some time regarding their removal and is now in a position to remove the wheel stops,” General Manager Assets and Environment, East Gippsland Shire Council Stuart McConnell said.
“Council has heard the concerns raised by local residents and visitors, particularly regarding the visibility of the barriers and will remove these wheel stops as part of its ongoing work to improve pedestrian accessibility,” he said.
