A fun-filled adventure was the perfect way to round out the 2024 year for the Lakes Entrance Girl Guides, with the longtime Girl Guide tradition of a camp held in December at Mingling Waters, Nowa Nowa.
The small yet excited group of girls arrived at their campsite on Friday, December 6, starting their two-night stay with activities including setting up their area and decorating collection bags ready for an all-day wide game scheduled for the following day.
A Guiding tradition, a wide game emphasises teamwork, communication, problem solving and planning skills.
Divided into two teams, the wide game saw the girls individually collect a variety of items from around the campsite, then in their teams make a safe/home area with their own flag. After creating bark and leaf rubbings the challenge culminated in attempts to capture the other team’s flag.
Saturday night featured a campfire after dinner when participants enjoyed singing and toasting marshmallows.
On Sunday, the group packed up and concluded the weekend’s program with a ‘Guides Own’, offering an opportunity for reflection, sharing, and expressing gratitude. Additionally, a special ceremony was held for the unit’s newest leader, Rhiannon Drew (known by her Guiding name, Seahorse), who made her promise as an Australian Girl Guide.
The Lakes Entrance Girl Guides will continue to meet on Monday nights this year, during school terms, at the Lake Tyers Angling Club. For information on how to join the local group as either a Girl Guide or an adult leader/assistant, please visit the Girl Guides Victoria website.
