‘The Great Outdoors’, East Gippsland the place,
This country to wander, not hide the face.
To tour this land and test this find,
Strange it seems, with a relaxed mind.
From Bairnsdale to Orbost it had begun,
Originally built for trains to run.
Bridges formed from timbers found,
With trees nearby to an axe head sound.
To cover rivers and creeks below,
Securing a trip for all to go.
What is left, there’s much to see,
Escape outdoors and oh so free.
The rail trail, maintained for all,
Enjoy what’s left, embody the call.
For young and old, to make the hike,
It’s walk the track or peddle a bike.
Forests of trees, birds chirping a song,
Much to see from a crowded throng.
Now take one’s time with days to spare,
To enjoy outdoors without a care.
Walk the beaches all covered in sand,
A castle to build with a tender hand.
Fishing responds when tide is right,
Prawns are caught on a star-filled night.
Time runs out when you’re having fun,
It seems like yesterday a victory won.
‘The Great Outdoors’ could a person forget,
Never with a mind, when firmly set.
