Lakes Entrance Surf Lifesaving Club held its annual Bronze Camp last week in some varying weather conditions, but it didn’t stop participants spreading Christmas cheer.
Chief instructor, Jessica Woodward, did a commendable job organising instructors and leading a group of 20 15-16-year- olds through their training amid COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions.
“The point of the camp is to develop surf skills so the participants can prevent and execute surf rescues throughout patrolling,” Jess said.
“They also do short courses in first aid and other relevant areas.”
In a normal year the prospective lifesavers would stay at the club and have a full week of bonding and raining, but with COVID-19 restrictions the camp was spread over two weeks, 9am to 5pm on each of the program’s days.
The completion of the course will see another set of young lifesavers patrolling our beaches this summer. Weekend patrols are already underway and the regular daily patrols at Main and Eastern beaches will kick off on Boxing Day. Both beaches will be patrolled from 10am to 6pm every day until Australia Day when the beaches will return to being patrolled on a weekends only.
