Operation MIRUM

Operation MIRUM

An operation conducted by local police, involving members from Orbost and Bairnsdale Highway Patrol units in and around Lakes Entrance over two nights, detected 22 drivers breaking the law.

Operation MIRUM was carried out on Thursday and Friday of last week and resulted in some drivers accumulating more than one ticket.

Targetting impaired drivers – those under the influence of alcohol or drugs and distracted drivers – police conducted 125 preliminary breath tests and 27 drug tests.

Four people, two women and two men, had drugs detected in their system and were also not wearing a seat belt.

With the exception of one male in his late 30s, all other drivers were aged in their 20s.

The four offenders were each issued an infringement notice for $484 and had their licences suspended for six months.

A 69-year-old man was caught drink driving, recording a level of .067.

He too received an infringement notice for $484 and had his licence suspended for six months.

Three people were also driving unregistered motor vehicles, which earned them a ticket for $806, and four defect notices were issued to unroadworthy vehicles.

One driver was issued a ticket for $322 and the loss of three demerit points for overtaking on double lines.
