Four industrious men from Lakes Entrance took it upon themselves to clean up the vacant corner allotment of Myer Street and the Esplanade, before visitors and tourists arrived in town ahead of the Christmas / New Year break.

Mike Anketell, who is part of the group called ‘Seniors of Lakes Entrance’ said he had arranged for the site – formerly the Ocean Bridge service station to have a pre-existing fence depicting some of Lakes Entrance’s attractions taken down in late 2016 and the area beautified with a new coat of paint and logs for sitting.

However, since the removal of the fence and subsequent works, the property has been left unattended in the middle of the town’s busiest thoroughfare during the summer period.

“Unfortunately, the owner hasn’t taken any responsibility to maintain the site since,” Mr Anketell said.

“This site is in one of the most central parts of the town and is an absolute eyesore.

“It is highly visible to both tourists and locals and mars the whole atmosphere of the area. It has been an issue for many years.”

Mr Anketell, along with Jeff Wilson, Ted Hare and Bruce Hurley, got busy on Thursday, December 20. They worked tirelessly to get all the weeds out and rake and sweep the site.

“Now that the visitors have arrived, the area won’t be such an embarrassment to the town,” Mr Anketell said.
