Classes people over 50 focus on building strength and balance, providing a gentle workout that engages muscles participants may not have used in a while. Alongside learning the art of ballet, attendees can relax to beautiful music, helping to release stress while connecting with likeminded people. “JPSD welcomes all,” tutor Jan Pianta said, highlighting that the classes were designed for everyone, regardless of experience or skill level. Jan said the classes were designed to build stamina, improve fitness and bone strength and engage the mind. There are great classes concentrating on classical ballet and tap for people over 50. Jan said it was never too late to begin classical ballet training. “This wonderful program is designed to have late starters learn the art of classical ballet whilst developing and building bone and muscle strength, increase balance and core muscles, for an improved and more active lifestyle. Classes are held on Thursdays from 10.15am to 11am. The ballet class is followed by a tap class from 11am to 11.30am for people who may have tapped when younger. A beginner’s tap class is held from 11.30am to noon. Jan said the classes were designed for all abilities. “I have a participant who has Parkinson’s Disease and she is able to take part using the bar for balance.” “There has been research conducted in Canada about the benefits of dancing for people with Parkinson’s. "The most common medication issues among seniors are non-compliance with medications, sleep problems, back pain (uncontrolled pain even though on painkillers), dry eye syndromes, and skin problems (dry skin, suspected skin melanoma, etc.)," a pharmacist from Terry White Chemmart said. Problems such as missed doses can be avoided by using a Dosing Administration Aid (DAA) service like the Webster pack service, purchasing a weekly pill box with dosing times, or using a tablet timer machine. "Seniors can also seek help from carers provided by government bodies or private nursing services," the pharmacist added. Older residents should regularly visit their GP for follow-ups and check-ups, and ensure prescriptions are filled regularly to maintain compliance and improve quality of life. "If they have any issues with their medications or are unsure about how to take them, they should visit the pharmacy and seek professional advice," the pharmacist said. "If they suffer intolerable side effects or allergic reactions, they should call 000 or visit their GP to discuss their treatment plan." Many seniors take multiple medications at once. "If seniors have problems like compliance issues (staying alone, no carers, mobility issues, memory issues, etc.), they can request a medication review from their GP, and the pharmacist can conduct a Home Medication Review to improve the treatment plan. DAA services should also be used for those who have difficulties handling their medications," the pharmacist explained. The pharmacy also recommended simple steps to stay on top of health beyond just picking up prescriptions: - "Ask questions – have you used it before? What symptoms are you having? How long have you used this medication? Do you notice any improvement after taking it? Do you do regular check-ups or blood tests to ensure the medication is effective? Have you noticed any unwanted effects?" - "Supplements – we can always recommend supplements to maximise the effect of treatment." - "For example, patients who are on reflux medication – we can suggest the use of probiotics or antacids." - "Patients who are on antibiotics – suggest the use of probiotics or thrush medications (if they are prone to thrush, etc.)." - "Lifestyle management – advice on lifestyle changes and healthy diet plans."
