This Sunday recovered Lyme disease patient Tanner McMillan, 17, will embark on an epic hike spanning the length of the iconic 90 Mile Beach.
Tanner and his mate Ed Blandford have set this challenge to raise awareness and vital funds for the forgotten Aussies suffering from tick-borne diseases.
A Journey Fuelled by Courage and Resilience
Tanner’s story is one of inspiration and courage. Diagnosed with Lyme disease after a tick bite at the tender age of 11, Tanner experienced years of debilitating symptoms. Missing years of his childhood and school, he suffered extreme fatigue, pain and digestive and neurological issues, which left him bedridden. After an arduous recovery journey, Tanner is now determined to help others suffering from this often misunderstood and underdiagnosed condition.
“Lyme disease took away years of my life. Now that I am better, I want to give back and help others who are struggling,” Tanner said.
“This hike is my way of saying thank you to everyone who supported me, and I hope it brings attention to the ongoing challenges faced by people with Lyme disease in Australia.”
The goal of this hike is not only to raise awareness but also to raise $65,000 for the Lyme Disease Association of Australia.
These funds will support tick-borne disease research, advocacy and patient support services, as well as contribute to efforts to improve diagnosis and treatment options in Australia.
Tanner and Ed’s campaign highlights the urgent need for greater public understanding and resources dedicated to Lyme and related diseases.
To support their fundraising efforts, a dedicated campaign has been launched through MyCause, where donations can be made directly.
Tanner’s story was aired on The Project in 2023, and in 2024 his Epic Hike has garnered significant community and media attention, with local and national businesses offering sponsorships to help them reach their target. He was recently dubbed ‘Brave Heart’ by Australia’s Great Walks magazine.
