The annual Gippsland Lakes Ladies Classic was played this week at the Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale Golf Courses, with a record number of participants enjoying playing some quality golf in near idyllic conditions.
The three-day event saw a stableford event hosted by Lakes Entrance on Monday, followed by a similar event on Tuesday at Bairnsdale, culminating in a Canadian Foursome at the same venue on Wednesday.
Such is pulling power of the event, it attracts players from all over Victoria, as well as participants from New South Wales and Queensland.Monday’s event saw 121 tackle the Lakes Entrance course, which continues to be the envy of most in the state.
Local player, Sandi East led the scoring with a sensational 44 points, taking out “C” grade, whilst other winners were Melinda May (Bairnsdale) in “A” grade and the Waverley pair of Heather Richards and Iwona Wasilewski in “B” and “D” grade respectively.
In local club golf, Lynne Sommerville was successful in last week’s young and restless event, while Ian Stephens (“A” grade) and John Melrose (“B” grade) were the winners of ruthless and toothless.
Wednesday’s ladies’ event was slightly down on numbers, due to the Classic at Eagle Point, but it didn’t deter Jacinta Wilson, who was the winner with an impressive 42 points, the other victor being the consistent Apola Weel, who continued her great run with another good score of 37 points.
Thursday men’s event was dominated by Stephens, who backed up Tuesday’s effort with 43 points, winning “C” grade and overall.
Robert Sperring (“A” grade) and Stuart Symes (“B” grade) were also rewarded for their efforts.
Adrian Parry had a day out on Saturday, winning “C” grade and the overall event, with a sensational 44 points.Rick Murray (“A” grade) and Peter Nicholas (“B” grade) were divisional winners with good scores of 41 and 39 points respectively.
Saturday ladies’ winner was the evergreen, Nola McKenna, who can still swing a club impressively in her 90s with 38 stableford points.
