GIPPSLAND AND EAST Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative (GEGAC) members are encouraged to attend the GEGAC annual general meeting on Wednesday, November 27. It will begin with a smoking ceremony at 9.30am, followed by the meeting at 10am and a community lunch at 12.30pm.
THE EAST GIPPSLAND Art Gallery WRAP 2024 is a small artwork prize with an $8000 acquisitive first prize. Open to every living artist anywhere, subject to terms and conditions, the gallery will accept any subject, medium and all works entered will be displayed. Artwork can be sold during the exhibition and taken at time of purchase, with the East Gippsland Art Gallery taking no commission of artwork sales during WRAP 2024. The competition is capped at 400 works, so artists are advised to enter as early as you can. Entry is free for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and free for all youth artists under 25 years of age. Entries close on Monday, November 18.
THE BAIRNSDALE POLICE divisional van intercepted a white Holden ute on Nicholson Street on Saturday, November 2. Police intercepted the vehicle after observing on CCTV a male lying on the tray of the ute as it travelled through the Bairnsdale CBD. The driver, a 20-year-old Bairnsdale man, had his vehicle impounded for one month at a cost of $950. He will receive a summons to attend court on a later date. The male lying on the tray will receive an infringement notice.

THE BAIRNSDALE TOY Run, Riding for a Cause, will depart from the Bairnsdale Riverside Caravan Park on Saturday, December 8 from 11am. It will visit Bruthen, Nowa Nowa and Lakes Entrance.

COLOUR AND CREATIVITY workshops will be held at the Benambra Neighbourhood House today and December 10, with attendees given the opportunity to connect with their creative side, using acrylic paint on stretchered canvas and coloured ink on paper. Art is a fun and therapeutic activity great for calming the mind and body, developing self-awareness and cultivating mental wellbeing.
AN OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT will be held at the Benambra Recreation Reserve on November 21, with “Just a Farmer” set to screen.
CANN RIVER
THE NEXT MARKET at the Cann River Community Centre on Saturday is looming as possibly the biggest yet with the family fun day incorporating lawn motor racing (11.30am-4pm) and a car show. The event is family friendly event drugs and alcohol not permitted.

THE ENSAY BUSH Nursing Centre recently received another 120 frozen soups and meals from the Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House. This food service has been operating for two years unfunded with six sites utilising these meals in their communities. This is a unique service across Australia commencing out of the 2019/20 bushfires when the house was delivering into roadblocked communities.
GLENMAGGIE
TRUE GRIT, AUSTRALIA’S premier obstacle course challenge, is coming to Glenmaggie this Saturday. The thrilling event will not only be challenging participants with 10 kilometres of terrain and 35 obstacles but will also create a significant economic boost for the local community.
HEYFIELD
LOCAL POLICE on November 8 at approximately 8am intercepted a Silver Toyota Prado on Tyson Road. During the intercept, police discovered that the driver, a 53-year-old female from Heyfield, was driving during a period of disqualification. The female’s vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $950 and she will be summonsed to appear at the Sale Magistrates at a later date for traffic related offences.
LOCAL CRICKET STAR Maddie Winter has been selected in the Victorian Country side under 16 side to play in the Australian Championships in January.

A BEGINNER’S SOCIAL RIDE will be held at the Colquhoun Mountain Bike Park this Sunday, an opportunity to come along and ride some of the single trails and get a taste of what mountain bike riding has to offer. Warming up on the beginner’s loop (400 metres), before tackling five kilometres of fairly flat trails. All riders must have a mountain bike with working gears and brakes, a helmet and drinking water. Riders 16 or under must be accompanied by an adult.

REAL CHRISTMAS TREES will be sold in Lindenow at the Community Hall car park across from the Lindenow pub on the December 7-8, between 10am and 1pm.
LOCH SPORT
WELLINGTON SHIRE COUNCIL has fast tracked the renewal of Seagull Drive boat ramp in Loch Sport. The decision follows storm damage in August which had worsened coastal erosion along the foreshore, emphasising the need for urgent action. To ensure the ramp is accessible for the Christmas and New Year holiday season, the council will soon begin a two-stage project. Stage one, led by local company Carter Marine, will involve removing the old ramp and laying a rock foundation to support new pre-cast concrete panels similar to those used at Seacombe boat ramp. Stage two, planned for the 2025-26 financial year and subject to budget approval from the newly-formed council, will focus on enhancing the ramp’s approach, strength and structural support.
LONGFORD
POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING a suspicious grass fire from November 9, which commenced at approximately 3.15pm on the side of Seaspray Road near the intersection of Hebbards Road. The fire was brought under control and extinguished by CFA. Wellington Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour or who may have dashcam footage of the area at the time.

A FREE MENTAL Health – Mind your Mates workshop will be held in Maffra at the Neighbourhood House on Tuesday, November 19, between 1-3.30pm. Learn how to spot signs of a crisis and respond with confidence, building a stronger, more resilient community. This project received grant funding from the Victorian Government’s 2022-23 Council Flood Support Fund.
GIPPSLAND VEHICLE COLLECTION celebrated its 20th birthday last Sunday with a great family day. The event attracted a massive turnout from across the region, with even Elvis sighted in the crowd. A fundraising campaign for a new roof was launched.

NEWRY GOLF CLUB is delighted to have secured a Wellington Shire Community Assistance Grant, which will enable the committee to purchase 55 much needed new chairs for their clubrooms.

OMEO FOOTBALL NETBALL Club will host its annual general meeting at the Omeo Recreation Reserve on Tuesday, November 19, from 7.30pm.
THE 2024 OMEO SHOW will take place this Saturday with one of the many features being woodchopping events, which always attract plenty of interest. There will be plenty of stalls to check out and the horse events are always hotly contested.

THE ORBOST BIKE riding group will have their next ride this Sunday, leaving from the Orbost Neighbourhood House from 9am. The ride will be to Jarramond and is around 16 kilometres on an easy gradient.
THE ORBOST GOLF Club will host a golf day for mental health this Saturday. It will be a four-person ambrose event, with a shotgun start from 11am.

ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, the Wellington Highway Patrol was conducting patrols within the Sale area when a motorbike was detected going 153 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone on the Princes Highway coming out of Sale. The motorbike was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $950. The rider will be summonsed to attend court regarding excessive speed.
WELLINGTON SHIRE COUNCIL election results have been finalised with councillors elected to serve a four-year term from 2024 until 2028. The Wellington Shire’s newly-elected council will include the following, returning councillors Scott Rossetti, Garry Stephens, Carmel Ripper and John Tatterson, with newly-elected councillors Liz Foat, Geoff Wells, Cindy Madeley, Edward Lowe and Catherine Bannerman.
WELLINGTON SHIRE COUNCIL is holding a fire season preparation, no fee green waste disposal. Through to Sunday, consumers can bring their green waste to council waste facilities for no fee (excluding Dargo). Loch Sport Transfer Station has no-fee green waste until Saturday, November 30.

GIPPSLAND REGIONAL SPORTING Complex’s Tiny Stars program is back in November. The six-week introductory sports program gives children learn foundational skills through age-appropriate activities and games that are challenging but fun and non-competitive. It runs on Monday and Thursday afternoons between 4.15-5pm.

SEASPRAY WAS THE only Gippsland representative at the Tidy Towns Awards in Melbourne recently. The Seaspray Ratepayers Association’s historic signboard walk, which has been constructed along the town’s foreshore reserve, was a finalist in the Heritage and Culture category.
