Local photographer Jeremy Kilby has recently spotted an influx in pelicans in the Tambo River and captured some amazing shots from the riverbank.
“Their numbers have been quite remarkable — there have been hundreds, if not thousands, of birds in the Tambo River,” he said.
“Based on what I’ve observed, the pelicans seem to be opportunistically taking advantage of the great cormorants’ hunting efforts. While the cormorants dive for fish, particularly bream, the pelicans wait for them to surface and then quickly move in to snatch the fish from them.
“It’s a fascinating dynamic to observe and has drawn more than a few spectators with people stopping by on the side of the Metung Road and the Johnsonville Boat Ramp to watch.”
Pelicans and cormorants often gather in large groups when food is plentiful and the recent conditions in the river have drawn more birds to the area.
