GIPPSLAND COMMUNITY FOUNDATION will hold annual general meeting on Monday, November 11, from 3pm at the Centre for Combined Health (5 Radford Place, Bairnsdale). The meeting will see the sharing of projects achieved by community, featuring a review of the 2023/24 period. The new first signature project, Youth on Purpose, will also be unveiled. A series of engaging youth workshops that encourage community leadership and personal confidence, brilliantly facilitated by Chico Johnson. They will also be unveiling the result of an independent evaluation on the impact, effectiveness and community response to Gippsland Community Foundation activities.
BAIRNSDALE SQUASH and Racquetball will host the 2024 Gippsland Lakes Classic from November 8-10.
GIPPSLAND AND EAST Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative (GEGAC) members are encouraged to attend the GEGAC annual general meeting on Wednesday, November 27. It will begin with a smoking ceremony at 9.30am, followed by the meeting at 10am and a community lunch at 12.30pm.

HEYFIELD FOOTBALL Netball Club has landed a huge coup with signing of goal kicking legend Darren Sheen for season 2025. Sheen in no stranger to the region or most regions in Victoria. Sheen has kicked more than 1200 goals including six centuries, to add to multiple premierships and team of the year selections.

A BEGINNER’S SOCIAL RIDE will be held at the Colquhoun Mountain Bike Park on Sunday, November 10. An opportunity to come along and ride some of the single trails and get a taste of what mountain bike riding has to offer.
Warming up on the beginner’s loop (400 metres), before tackling five kilometres of fairly flat trails. All riders must have a mountain bike with working gears and brakes, a helmet and drinking water. Riders 16 or under must be accompanied by an adult.

THE FIRST DAY of the Dead Mini Festival will take place at Iceworks on November 9-10. It will begin with a couple of masterclasses and workshops, before an opportunity to enjoy some topical movie screenings. The main activity of the event is the Ofrenda, the heart of this celebration, filled with colourful and meaningful objects.

GEOFF CRAWFORD was recently made a life member of the Maffra Community Sports Club at the 2024 annual general meeting. Crawford has been an integral part of the club for many years, holding the position of club secretary for seven years, prior to becoming vice president in 2016, serving in that capacity for six years. To this day he continues to serve on the board, showing his ongoing commitment to both the club and the community. Crawford’s dedication, leadership and hard work have played a significant role in shaping the club into what it is today. Crawford joins a short but dedicated list of life members including Geoff Stobie, John Vardy, Deirdre Relph, Barry Bedggood and Kevin Lanigan.
THE 2024 MAFFRA Show was a huge hit with a jam-packed program of events across the weekend. Events began last Friday with riders and their horses taking to the ring for the equestrian events. Throughout the day, local school students brought a buzz of excitement as the youngest in the community wandered the showground. Saturday featured a wide range of competitions, demonstrations, rides, performances, food and fun activities. The show jumping and horse events were again popular as was the livestock section. The fun didn’t stop when the sun went down with the night carnival including side shows, rides, the kids’ zone, Shetland derby, dog high jump, the Maffra mile, lawn mower spectacle and the demolition derby, a prelude to the fireworks display to end the second day of festivities.
MALLACOOTA
BASTIAN POINT has restricted access to boaters and pedestrians as part of the groyne wall remediation works. Beach access via the walking track south of the boat ramp is now closed until works are complete, while the northern boat ramp will be open, boaters may experience delays when trucks are unloading rock. Traffic control will provide guidance. Pedestrian access associated with boat launching and retrieval is allowed but should be kept to a minimum.

A FREE INSURANCE workshop will be held today at the Newry Hall from 10am to noon. The workshop is designed to boost resilience and preparedness for anyone over 18 years of age, taking in topics like power outages, home and contents coverage, agricultural insurance and legal matters in the event of a disaster.

THE TOWN’S FAMOUS “Rosedale Cherries” and their owner Russ Culwick have relocated “next door” to the original shipping container sight. Culwick has taken the leap from his container into a permanent premises to continue his sales routine which is now in its 17th year.
SALE
THE TRADITIONAL SALE Agricultural Show will be held at the Sale Showgrounds this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Friday there will be arena events including interschool classes. The exhibition pavilion will open after after judging finishes, while food stalls and carnival rides will be operational. The night carnival will feature the shetland steeplechase, novelties, monster trucks, young farmers challenge, fireworks and carnival rides until late. Saturday will see horse and cattle judging on the main arena. There will be the judging of the prestigious carrot cake competition, while the poultry shed, wool and exhibition pavilions will be open all day. Carnival rides finish at end of the day. Entry is free for spectators on Sunday, with horse events being staged on the main arena.
POLICE OBSERVED a male driving a grey Toyota Kluger in the Sale area on October 15. Enquiries revealed that the male driving was in fact disqualified after driving while exceeding the prescribed concentration of drugs in his oral fluid. The driver of the Kluger was not the registered owner of the car so the registered owner was served with a notice to surrender the vehicle to Police on October 25 at 10am. The owner has failed to surrender the vehicle to police on the nominated date and time. Subsequently police have attended a Sale address, located and impounded the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle will be summonsed for failing to surrender the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle will be summonsed to court for driving while disqualified.
LAST WEEK’S WELLINGTON Schools Shoot at Sale Field and Game was a huge success for the Gippsland Grammar School’s shooting program. The school was represented by four squads out of the 20 squads competing in the competition from other schools across the Wellington Shire. One of the Grammar squads won top honours for the day with an impressive score of 91 targets broken out of 100. In the individual section Jack Nethercote secured second place in senior boys and Finn Carpenter third after a thrilling five-way shoot-off. In the junior boys Anzac Watkinson took first place and Caleb Osler finished third after an exciting shoot-off against rising talent Harley Clarke. In the senior girls, Billie Kee earned third place after another intense shoot-off. The school’s shooting program was established in the mid-1970s and is one of its most popular co-curricular activities with about 55 students from years eight-12 participating and competing in the sport each year.
LOCAL SWIMMING administrator Jacqueline Madden has been rewarded for her hard work with a life membership of Swimming Victoria.
AT APPROXIMATELY 4pm on October 23, Wellington Highway Patrol solo responded to a complaint of youths riding a motorised bicycle around the Sale Velodrome area. Police located the 16-year-old male and it was revealed he has already received an official warning and previously had another motorised bicycle impounded. As a result, police impounded the motorised bicycle for a period of 30 days at a cost of $995. He will be summonsed to appear at court for multiple traffic offences.

A CAMPDRAFT CLINIC will be held on November 2-3 at the Salt Creek Grounds. Instructors will include David White, Janie Shelley and Lance Anderson.
STRATFORD
The Stratford Short Play Festival will be held at the Stratford Courthouse on November 8 from 7.30pm. One of the five plays to be performed is “The Nine Tales of Jinx” by Cerise de Gelder, presented by the Bairnsdale Production Line Theatre Company. Scamp has just lost his first life, but thankfully Scamp is a cat and has eight more to go. While waiting to return to the land of the living, Scamp meets Jinx, an elderly cat who has lived many an adventurous life and died many a misadventurous death.
SWAN REACH
SWAN REACH HOCKEY Club will hold its annual general meeting at the WORLD precinct on November 6 at 6pm. Discussions will centre on the upcoming 2025 season
and anything that needs to be arranged during the off season. The meeting presents a great opportunity to become a valued contributor to the club and have your say on the way it is run. Committee positions available include president, vice president, records secretary, minutes secretary, social media secretary, treasurer and general committee member.
