BAIRNSDALE CHRISTMAS PARADE will be held on Saturday, December 14 starting at 11am, to be followed by the Laneway 3875 Christmas Festival. This year’s parade theme is Green and Gold.
GIPPSLAND COMMUNITY FOUNDATION will hold annual general meeting on Monday, November 11, from 3pm at the Centre for Combined Health (5 Radford Place, Bairnsdale). The meeting will see the sharing of projects achieved by community, featuring a review of the 2023/2024 period. The new first signature project, Youth on Purpose, will also be unveiled. A series of engaging youth workshops that encourage community leadership and personal confidence, brilliantly facilitated by Chico Johnson. They will also be unveiling the result of our independent evaluation on the impact, effectiveness and community response to Gippsland Community Foundation activities. Gippsland Community Foundation are deeply proud of our ongoing involvement in community strengthening activities across Gippsland.
BAIRNSDALE RACING CLUB was thrilled to hold Breast Care Support fund of East Gippsland annual major fundraiser at the racecourse over the weekend. The ‘Frocks and Fillies’ long lunch catered by Albert & Co – Coffee Food Catering was a huge success the total raised, the biggest ever thanks to 90 ladies and a few men.

BENAMBRA NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE will conduct it annual general meeting on October 30 from 11am at Benambra Neighbourhood House. The house is looking for new people to join the committee with fresh ideas, skills and know how, with an interest to make things better for communities. All positions will be declared vacant. ENSAY
Police are investigating a series of thefts in the Ensay, Swifts Creek and Tongio areas between the October 8-10. A Red Honda CRF250 dirt bike was stolen from Tongio, the Swifts Creek Recreation Reserve “lost” a lawn mower key and diesel. A large number of tools and building equipment were stolen from a secured shipping container at the Ensay Recreation Reserve.

GIPPSLAND AGRICULTRAL GROUP will hold its Spring Field Day this Thursday from 8.30am-3.30pm. Workshops will be held in African Lovegrass, agro-forestry, artificial insemination in beef cows, top soil, lucerne growth, fertilisers, fungicides, pasture growth, nitrogen fixation, ovatism and lamb survival percentages.

There’s been plenty of excitement in town, with the Nine Network program Country House Hunters recently broadcast new episodes taking place in Heyfield. In the show, host Catriona Rowntree guides 10 couples on their quest for the perfect country homes across Australia’s rural landscape. In the Heyfield episode, Ms Rowntree helped Darren and Kathryn, who are from the Yarra Valley, explore serene and spacious homes in the timber town.
AS PART OF the Seniors Festival, a high tea for the wonderful senior’s community will be held at the Heyfield Community Resource Centre on October 30 from 1.30pm. A delightful way to relax, enjoy tasty treats and sip on your favourite tea, all free of charge.
FREE FOREST THERAPY walks for seniors will be held in the Wellington Shire as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival. These free forest therapy walks are a perfect way to get moving, socialise and soak in the calming benefits of the outdoors. They will be held in the Heyfield Apex Park (October 29, 1.30 – 3pm) and Sale Botanic Gardens (October 31, 1.30-3pm).

LAST SATURDAY’s Sale Maffra Cricket Association (SMCA) round was named after local legend, Kevin Lanigan, the second legend to be recognised with a tribute round as part of the SMCA 75th season celebrations. With a career that has covered 60 seasons, Lanigan is recognised as one of Maffra’s greatest sporting prodigies. Beginning a 10-year association with the Tinamba club at the age of 13, Lanigan followed this with stints at district club Prahran, Elsternwick and sub-district club Moorabbin, before returning home to join Maffra. At Maffra, Lanigan has done almost everything over the past 45 years: 255 games, five premierships, five-time club champion, seven batting trophies, three SMCA batting awards, SMCA cricketer of the year in 1982-83, served as president, secretary, treasurer, publicity officer and groundsman, as well as representing the SMCA at Gippsland Cricket League and Country Week on numerous occasions and twice represented Gippsland against New Zealand national teams. Not surprisingly, Lanigan is a life member of both the Maffra Cricket Club and the SMCA. In recent years, while continuing his passion for cricket in Maffra’s lower grades, Lanigan has also played veterans cricket for the Gippsland Goannas – so successfully he has been selected to represent Victoria in interstate carnivals, not just as a player, but as captain. Most recently, he captained Australia’s over 70s team in the World Cup in England.

THE REMEDIATION WORKS on the Bastion Point rock groyne were scheduled to start on Monday. Due to the limited area available for these operations, there may be some temporary disruptions. Specifically, trucks will be on site delivering rocks which may cause delays for mariners and users of the northern boat ramp. These essential repairs, which are anticipated to be completed by December 2024.

LAKE WELLINGTON YACHT CLUB (LWYC) will host the 52nd RL24 National Championships from January 6-10. LWYC boasts a proud history with RL24s, over the years more than 22 RL24s having been members. It is 26 years since the championships were contested at Lake Wellington and the club is keen to make the 52nd Nationals a big event. Last year’s event attracted 30 boats, the largest fleet yet. This year there are already currently 19 entries. The class has always attracted skilled skippers and crews who are quick to pass on tips and tuning hints, making the Nationals a great opportunity for family and friends to have a crack at competitive sailing.

IT’S TIME TO leave your mark and vote for the 2024 Victorian Tree of the Year. The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) has selected a lineup of nine trees across the state as finalists in the 2024 Victorian Tree of the Year award, including the critically endangered Cabbage Palm, found right here in East Gippsland’s Cabbage Tree Creek Flora Reserve near Marlo. This rare palm is the most southern population of any Australian palm and one of only three natural populations left in the state. Voting is open until midnight, Tuesday, October 29.
ORBOST NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE will host a legal knowledge training workshop today between 12-4pm. The information session provides free legal knowledge training and family support service referral information for bush nurses, allied health professionals, frontline workers and community advocates working in East Gippsland locations. The session is catered, and information will be delivered by legal experts from the Gippsland Community Legal Service and Gippsland Family Pathways Network, and is funded by the Victoria Law Foundation.

GIPPSLAND MOTORISTS WILL be enjoying a fully duplicated Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale within weeks as the final stage of the project is scheduled for completion, according to local MP Darren Chester. The Federal Member for Gippsland secured 80 per cent of the funding for the duplication project from the previous Coalition Government and expects to see significant safety and productivity improvements for the transport sector and the travelling public.

SPRING RACING is here and the Sale Turf Club will host its flagship event the 2024 Sale Cup On Sunday.
THE TRADITIONAL Sale Agricultural Show will be held at the Sale Showgrounds from November 1-3. On Friday November 1, there will be arena events including interschool classes. The exhibition pavilion will open after after judging finishes, while food stalls and carnival rides will be operational. The night carnival will feature the shetland steeplechase, novelties, monster trucks, young farmers challenge, fireworks and carnival rides until late. Saturday, November 2, will see horse and cattle judging on the main arena. There will be the judging of the prestigious carrot cake competition, while the poultry shed, wool and exhibition pavilions will be open all day. Carnival rides finish at end of the day. Entry is free for spectators on Sunday, with horse events being staged on the main arena.
ON TUESDAY October 15, at approximately 2.14am, local police were responding to an incident in the Sale area, when they saw a white Holden Commodore station wagon travelling north bound on York Street driving past police with no headlights. Police patrolled the immediate vicinity and located the vehicle heading east bound on Macarthur Street, observing the vehicle take off at a fast rate of speed and taking evasive action to avoid officers. Enquires revealed a male driver and female passenger in the vehicle at the time, with the male driver resembling the registered owner, who later handed himself in to Sale Police Station. Police impounded the vehicle for a period of 30 days and male was released pending summons for several driving offences.
Wellington’s Biggest Ever Blokes Barbecue was a massive hit, with a sell-out crowd turning up for the annual event, raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. A fantastic day of community, mateship, for a great cause.

THE SARSFIELD RECREATION Reserve and Community hosted a cooking workshop last weekend, with pizza, focaccia and pasta on the menu. Talks focused on different types of flour, working gluten, kneading techniques and why it’s so important to weigh flour. Everyone took home the recipes, some tips and information that were covered in the class after enjoying the fruits of their hard work.

LOCAL CRICKET STAR Matilda Pendergast has been selected in the Victoria Country squad for the under 19 female national cricket championships. Currently playing club cricket for Prahan in the Women’s premier competition, Pendergast played for Vic Country in last season’s under 19 championships, taking four wickets in five matches. This year’s championships will be held in Perth from December 2 to 9, with players vying for spots in the Australian squad for the under 19 Women’s World Cup, to be played in Malaysia in January.
