Fisheries Officers have been active locally, apprehending and fining three men who exceeded the catch limit.
The net-free Gippsland Lakes is home to some of Victoria’s best bream fishing and authorities are keen to keep it that way.
The trio were fishing on the Mitchell River Silt Jetties last Saturday when they were inspected by officers.
One angler from Bairnsdale had seven bream, which is the daily catch limit in the lakes system, inside a cooler beside him.
A further six bream were discovered in a hidden catch bag nearby. The second angler, from St Albans, had put 14 bream into the boot of his car, those fish were collected by a third man who was intercepted by officers en route to Bairnsdale.
The St Albans man, still fishing back on the river, was subsequently inspected and had a further six bream in a bucket.
In total, the pair had taken 33 bream in a single day, all of which were seized on the spot by officers.
The three men will share in fines of nearly $1600.
