It rained goals, just not for Lakes Entrance in its final East Gippsland football match of the season against reigning premier Wy Yung last Saturday at Tigerland.
The Seagulls, who have endured a treacherous month with injuries to key players, ended their season with a whimper, beaten by a Tigers side looking to win back-to-back premierships by 154 points.
Wy Yung booted 28 goals, led by a haul of 13 from Jack Betts, who rocketed to the top of the league goalkicking to finish the home and away season with 53, three ahead of Boisdale Briagolong captain Jim Reeves.
Lakes had a solid first quarter kicking two of its three goals, however the near full strength Tigers were keen to make a statement ahead of their elimination semi final against Stratford this Sunday, kicking nine goals in a brilliant first quarter to lead by 44.
The Seagulls showed grit defensively through the second and third quarters, however Wy Yung’s attacking firepower was still threatening kicking 10 goals to one across that period.
The floodgates opened in the final quarter, the Tigers piling on 10 majors to increase the 96-point three quarter time lead to 154.
Lakes fought hard until the end, Liam Carroll, Jordan Cullen and Matt Duggan kicking the side’s three goals, Carroll, Cullen, Cameron Ferris, Sabastian Etheridge, Jordan Clarke and Liam Allen in the best players.
Betts starred for the Tigers with Brodie Anderson and Harry Kellow adding three goals, and Bayden Ashwood and Aaron Hanuera two each. Kellow, Nathan Dennison, Norm Betts, Brad Daniel and Tom Stephenson were standouts for Wy Yung in a solid team performance.
