There have been many motorists expressing their concerns about the Church Street raised road markings in Lakes Entrance.
Pedestrians, especially the elderly and tourists, have been mistaking them for a pedestrian crossing.
These markings are identical to those used to cross the road in the Woolworths car park.
Although there is no official signage, vehicles give way to pedestrians crossing between Target and Woolworths.
Unfortunately, people are then presuming that these markings mean the same thing when crossing Church Street, opposite St John’s Anglican Church.
Adding to the confusion, pathways have been constructed leading onto the road on either side, for some people making it look like a place to cross.
Many locals have reported near misses when people walk out onto the street expecting traffic to slow down or stop.
A bend in the road, if approaching from the west, means drivers may not see these pedestrians until the last moment.
It is understood the raised road area is to slow down traffic, however, members of the community have indicated this is not working as drivers can quite comfortably negotiate the bump without altering their speed.
Signs have been erected, however, are on a rounded bar with black lettering and are not being heeded.
