The Lions Club and Gippsland Lakes Lionesses Junior Public Speaking East Gippsland finals were held recently, drawing a large turnout of families, teachers, and community members.
Students from Lakes Entrance Primary School, St Brendan’s Primary School, Gippsland Grammar and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School competed in the event, with two representatives from each school taking part in the grade 3/4 and grade 5/6 divisions.
Lioness secretary Cynthia Robinson served as emcee for the evening, while Lakes Entrance Lions Club member David Wright acted as timekeeper. Judges Chris Boyes, Janet Harris and Georgina White commended all participants on their research and presentation skills, noting that final scoring across both categories was exceptionally close.
Students in the grade 3/4 category delivered speeches on the topic ‘If You Could Holiday In Australia – Where and Why’, with Frankie Hunter from Lakes Entrance Primary School taking out first place for her presentation on Byron Bay.
In the grade 5/6 division, students addressed ‘If You Could Invite Anyone to Dinner – Who Would It Be and What Would You Cook Them’. Camilla Brownlow from Gippsland Grammar claimed top honours with her speech on inviting Anne Frank.
Both Frankie and Camilla will now advance to the Zone finals, with the opportunity to progress to the District Convention finals if successful.
All participating students received certificates of achievement before attendees enjoyed a supper catered by the Gippsland Lakes Lionesses.
