Why sunscreen should be part of your skincare – every day

by

in Local News

As dermal clinicians, one of the most common conversations we have with clients is about sun protection.

And while most people understand that sunscreen is important, we still see many people treating it as something they only need on a hot summer’s day, at the beach or when they’re going outdoors for an extended period.

The reality is quite different.

Sun protection is skincare. Every day.

Australia’s unique high UV environment means our skin experiences significant cumulative sun exposure throughout our lives. Over time, that exposure can contribute to pigmentation, uneven skin tone, redness, collagen breakdown and premature ageing — as well as increasing the risk of skin cancer.

For us, sunscreen isn’t simply about preventing sunburn. It is about protecting the health, integrity and appearance of the skin long term.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUNSCREEN

There are many different sunscreens available, and finding one that suits your skin can make all the difference.

At MediSkin, we have recently added Avocado Zinc to our retail range because it fits well with our philosophy of taking a considered, skin-health-focused approach to skincare — while also bringing a little colour, coverage and glow into the daily routine.

Avocado Zinc is an Australian-made mineral sunscreen range featuring zinc oxide as its UV filter. Mineral sunscreens can be particularly appealing for people who prefer a more gentle approach to sun protection, including those with sensitive or easily reactive skin.

But what really caught our attention is that Avocado Zinc isn’t simply about sunscreen. It can also become part of your everyday makeup routine.

SUNSCREEN MEETS MAKEUP

Let’s be honest — if we’re asking you to wear sunscreen every single day, why not make it something you actually enjoy using?

Avocado Zinc offers tinted SPF 50 sunscreens that provide sun protection while adding colour and coverage to the skin. For many people, they can act as a simple makeup replacement for everyday wear, helping even out the complexion without the need for a full face of foundation.

And then there are the fun extras.

Lip and cheek balms add a healthy wash of colour, while glow and bronzing drops can give the skin that extra touch of warmth and shimmer when you want a more radiant look.

For those days when you want a little more coverage, concealers can help disguise areas that need some extra attention.

The result is a much simpler approach to getting ready: protect, even out, add a little colour and glow — and you’re done.

Protecting your treatment results

For our clients having professional skin treatments, sunscreen becomes even more important.

Whether we’re treating pigmentation, redness, sun damage, acne scarring or signs of ageing with laser, IPL, peels or other advanced treatments, protecting the skin from UV exposure is an essential part of the process.

You can invest in professional treatments and high-quality skincare, but ongoing UV exposure can continue to work against those results.

Think of sunscreen as protecting your investment in your skin.

And when your SPF 50 is also providing a little coverage and colour, there is one less excuse for skipping it.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT SUMMER

One of the biggest misconceptions I would love to change is that sunscreen is only necessary when the sun feels strong.

UV radiation isn’t necessarily reflected by how hot you feel. You can have a cool or cloudy day and still experience significant UV exposure.

That’s why I encourage my clients to make sunscreen part of their morning routine — just like brushing their teeth.

And remember, sunscreen isn’t a licence to spend unlimited time in the sun. Hats, shade, protective clothing and avoiding periods of high UV are all important parts of a sensible sun-protection strategy.

MY SIMPLE RULE

If you’re going to invest time and money into looking after your skin, don’t overlook the most fundamental step.

Cleanse. Treat. Moisturise. Protect.

And if your sunscreen can also replace your everyday makeup, add a little colour, provide coverage and give you a healthy glow — even better.

Healthy skin isn’t achieved overnight. It’s the result of consistent, informed choices made over time.

At MediSkin, our approach has always been about treating the skin thoughtfully and supporting its health. For us, good sun protection will always be one of the foundations of that philosophy.

Avocado Zinc is now available at MediSkin Skin & Laser Clinic, with daily tinted SPF 50 sunscreens, concealers, lip and cheek balms, glow and bronzing drops and more.
