For decades, a dedicated group of local volunteers has been quietly making a major difference to patient care at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service.
The Bower Birds Auxiliary brings together community members who want to give back, foster new friendships and support local healthcare.
Throughout the year, the auxiliary raises vital funds through sausage sizzles, cake stalls, catering and special community events, with all proceeds assisting the hospital in purchasing essential medical equipment.
Recent fundraising efforts have delivered significant upgrades across multiple hospital departments. These include a vital signs monitor for Flanagan Ward, a slit lamp and a handheld bladder scanner for the Emergency Department and a birthing simulator for the Education Department.
For members, however, the role extends far beyond fundraising. Long-time member Anne Dowley, who joined the Bower Birds 12 years ago, said volunteering has provided her with deep community connections, giving her the opportunity to give back, meet new people, and build lasting friendships.
The Bower Birds meet on the third Thursday of each month at 11am for approximately an hour, with many members gathering for lunch afterwards. The group is currently seeking new members to join their ranks. No prior experience is required, and volunteers can contribute based on their own availability and interests.
Anyone interested in supporting their local hospital can contact the BRHS volunteer coordinator.
