A much-loved local kinder tradition is back for another year.
Y Kinders’ Lakes Entrance Preschool was delighted to re-introduce one of its most treasured events, the much-loved tradition of Obstacle-Thon.
The popular event, which aimed to bring generations of local families together through fun and a little bit of adventure, took place last week.
With a history dating back 30 years, and previously one of the highlights of the kinder year, the Obstacle-Thon was originally created as a fun and healthy way for children to challenge themselves, build confidence and experience safe risk-taking in a supportive environment.
“Children from the Swans and Blue Wrens groups tackled an obstacle course featuring climbing, jumping, balancing, water stations and breathing activities,” said Renee, educator at the preschool.
“We encouraged each child to participate at their own pace, with the focus on having fun, giving things a go and celebrating their achievements.”
For Renee, the event was about much more than completing an obstacle course.
It provided valuable opportunities for children to develop their skills and coordination while learning to tackle problems and persevere.
“We’re hoping that once again, the Obstacle-Thon will become a special part of the Lakes Entrance Preschool experience. It gives children the chance to challenge themselves in a safe, supported way while building confidence and resilience. We love seeing the pride on their faces as they realise what they are capable of,” she said.
Kinder families were invited to come along, with many revisiting their own kinder experience.
For some, the return of the event is also a trip down memory lane. Early Childhood Teacher, of the three-year-old group, Jenelle, remembers taking part while at kinder.
“I remember doing the Obstacle-Thon back in 1995 as a child myself,” Jenelle said.
“It’s incredibly special to now be part of it again, this time as a teacher in the Blue Wrens room. It’s a fantastic event, which really builds connections and community.”
Educator Hayley has also watched the tradition continue through generations.
“I’ve been part of the Obstacle-Thon for many years. Some of the children I watched take part are now adults, and their own children are coming through kinder and taking part too. It’s really special to see that tradition continue through generations of local families.”
For parent, Emily, it’s a beautiful connection to her own past.
“It’s amazing how life comes full circle. From being a little girl here myself, to now watching my daughter do the same.”
While for dad, Ash, memories of his own childhood Obstacle-Thon came flooding back when he heard about the event.
“Kinder seems such a distant memory, but when you walk into the same kinder to drop the next generation off, it all comes flooding back. The lifelong memories, where life as yourself and future friendships began. Something I had forgotten popped into my head. I’m very excited my own daughter is making her own lifelong memories doing the same thing in the same place, with familiar and new faces looking after her.”
The 10-lap challenge finished with a special medal ceremony, with families celebrating every child’s effort and achievement.
“Ultimately, the Obstacle-Thon is about having a go, being brave, supporting each other and making memories, a wonderful tradition that continues to bring the Lakes Entrance community together, and we’re looking forward to continuing it,” Renee added.
The Obstacle-Thon also raised funds towards exciting outdoor upgrades at the Preschool, including new water-play features and a bike track, creating even more opportunities for exploration and outdoor learning.
For interested families who would like to see the preschool and find out about other aspects of the program, there is an upcoming Open Day on Monday, September 7, between 4.30pm–5.30pm.
Additionally, kindergarten registrations for 2027 are still being accepted.
