Organisers behind the proposed Connecting Communities project are urging local residents to sign a community petition supporting a new walking and cycling link between Lake Tyers Beach and Lakes Entrance.
Project advocate Keith Docking said strong public support was essential to demonstrate community backing for investigating and progressing the vital infrastructure project.
The proposed trail route would connect the Bunga Beach carpark to the Red Bluff carpark, featuring a purpose-built pedestrian bridge over Lake Bunga.
Currently, petition sheets are available across numerous local businesses in both townships. The advocacy initiative has also gained support from local community group Light Up Lake Tyers Beach, whose volunteers will be visiting local residents to gather additional signatures.
“Presently, there is no safe and straightforward connection between Lake Tyers Beach and Lake Bunga for walkers and cyclists,” Mr Docking said.
“The communities are effectively disconnected and we are encouraging all to consider this project. If you think this is a good idea, it is important to sign the petition, not just agree with it.”
Advocates highlight that formalising the trail connection would significantly improve pedestrian safety and regional active transport options while uniting neighbouring coastal communities.
