The CWA Bairnsdale Amaroo branch held its recent monthly meeting at the Bridge Hall in Macleod Street on Monday, August 3.
President Olivia Harwood welcomed members, extending birthday wishes to Helen Harden and Margaret Woodward.
Among business discussed, members noted an upcoming East Gippsland CFA community meeting to prepare for the fire season, scheduled for Saturday, September 5, from 10am to 12pm at the new Sarsfield Hall.
The CWA East Gippsland Group will also plant a tree featuring a commemorative plaque in honour of Kevin and Greta Perry. Both were dedicated Sarsfield community members, with Greta serving as a longstanding member of Bairnsdale Amaroo CWA.
Joann presented a detailed international feature on Canadian wildlife, highlighting iconic species such as the beaver, moose, caribou, polar bear and Canada lynx. Members learned about the beaver’s role as “nature’s engineer” in maintaining freshwater ecosystems, as well as Canada’s critical role in polar bear conservation.
Lorraine Beulke delivered an insightful presentation on domestic violence awareness, highlighting that Gippsland continues to record some of the highest statistics in Victoria.
She emphasised the need for ongoing community follow-up and drew attention to the “Red Chair” initiative – placing painted chairs with informational plaques across the community to raise awareness. Olivia thanked Lorraine for her presentation and presented her with a small token of appreciation.
Welfare officer Lois reported she is visiting members Helen and Margaret, who have both been unwell.
In craft news, Karen outlined plans for the next hands-on session and displayed recent member creations, some of which will be donated to local foster children and women’s support services.
The branch’s next meeting will be held on Monday, September 7, starting at 10am (9am arrival).
