Lakes Entrance showjumper Nakita Willis has announced herself on the international stage following an outstanding performance at her debut Concours de Saut International 1 (CSI1*) event in Europe.
At just 15 years of age, the rising local star went head-to-head against some of the world’s elite riders in the open division, claiming the mantle of youngest competitor in the field.
Nakita, who trains under renowned international rider and trainer Kane Chester, travelled overseas facing significant hurdles ahead of the event.
While the majority of her rivals competed on their own horses, Nakita was tasked with riding a borrowed mount.
Initial plans allowed four days for Nakita to adjust to her new horse, but unforeseen circumstances pared her preparation back to a single training session on the eve of competition.
Despite the limited track time, the young rider made the most of her time abroad, taking full advantage of a tuition session with Australian Olympic rider Hilary Scott.
Competing at the picturesque Milestone Farm Arena in the Netherlands against a stacked field of international professionals, Nakita displayed composure well beyond her years. She produced a flawless, clear round over the 1.10-metre track to secure an impressive 13th place finish overall.
Nakita’s remarkable effort proves that with dedication and a tireless work ethic, East Gippsland athletes can match it with the very best on the world stage.
