Fresh tourism data for May reveals healthy visitation trends across Gippsland, with overnight stays and total nights spent in the region comfortably outperforming the wider Regional Victoria average.
Total overnight visitors grew by six per cent compared to the same month last year, while the number of nights spent in the region surged by 9.5 per cent. Overall visitation also tracked up by 3.6 per cent — a result Destination Gippsland described as particularly strong given the lack of major events on the regional calendar during the month.
However, the positive volume was offset by a small 0.4 per cent reduction in total visitor expenditure.
Industry analysts point to tightening consumer confidence and shifting spending habits as the primary drivers behind the softer economic yield, with travellers facing persistent pressures from high interest rates and broader cost-of-living strains.
These shifting habits also directly impacted the local accommodation sector, contributing to a 5.9 per cent drop in the average daily room rate across the region as operators adjusted pricing to attract budget-conscious travellers.
