Thirds claim top spot

Lakes Entrance has jumped to the top of the East Gippsland Football Netball League thirds ladder after defeating Lindenow by 47 points last Saturday at the Lakeside Oval.

The Seagulls began round 11 in third place, two points behind the Cats and Lucknow, but that all changed after they easily overturned Lindenow and the Magpies went down to Wy Yung at Bullumwaal Road.

Lakes Entrance’s only loss for the season was against the Cats in round four, but that was redeemed after a five-goal-to-one second-quarter blitz set up a 33-point half time lead.

Erratic goal-kicking in the second half from the home side was the only thing that kept the winning margin below 10 goals, as they kicked three goals to one to record an outstanding victory.

Zane Holley was in sensational form in the forward 50, kicking four goals, well assisted by Oscar Hopkins (three) and Leroy Hayes (two).

The better players in a splendid team effort were Holley, Harper Davis, Thomas Graham, Hopkins, Harrison Bennett and Hayes.

In the reserves, Lakes was quickly back on the winners’ list after tripping up last week against reigning premier Boisdale Briagolong.

The second-placed Seagulls ran out comfortable 39-point winners over the third-ranked Cats, who loom as a likely preliminary final match-up.

The Seagulls won all four quarters, having all the answers for the Cats when challenged hard early in each term. Noah Bottom was again outstanding, kicking seven of his side’s nine majors, and was joined in the best by Bailey So, James Daly, Will Addison and Michael Sowden.

This Saturday, Lakes Entrance will take on Lucknow at the Lucknow Recreation Reserve.
