Mt Hotham has received a significant mid-winter boost, with a major snow dump blanketing the alpine resort over the weekend just in time for the peak school holiday period.
The high country resort was the target of a welcome burst of wild winter weather, with weather forecasts delivering between 20 and 40 centimetres of fresh, natural snow across the mountain.
The heaviest parts of the downfall arrived overnight on Saturday, July 11, and continued through Sunday, combining with consistently sub-zero temperatures to rapidly build early-season snow cover across the ski fields.
The perfectly timed weekend snowfall allowed the Mt Hotham operations team to maximise their efforts, pairing the natural system with ongoing automated snowmaking campaigns as the cold conditions allowed.
Mt Hotham Alpine Resort general manager, Natalie Valentine, said the winter blast was exactly what the mountain needed to kick off the busy holiday week.
“The forecast snow is fantastic news for the resort and for the many visitors heading to Hotham this week,” Ms Valentine said.
“Combined with ongoing snowmaking efforts, we’re excited to see the snow cover building across the mountain and welcome guests to enjoy everything Hotham has to offer.”
For visiting families and first-time snow tourists who converged on the mountain over the weekend, the Hotham Hub has officially transitioned into full daily operations. The village facility provides straightforward access to dedicated tobogganing slopes and managed snowplay zones.
The community hub features an open public shelter, regional visitor information desks, heated indoor rest areas, and gear rental services operated through Hoys Skis, alongside food and drink options from the Hub Café.
Daily tobogganing sessions are now running from 9.30am to 4.30pm. With school holiday crowds remaining high, visitors are being urged to book their snow play sessions online via the Hotham website and monitor the live Lift Report and Hotham App for real-time mountain conditions.
