Businesses in Lakes Entrance have been boosted by the Lakes Lights Festival weekend, with most reporting good trade, particularly on the Saturday night during the Lantern Parade.
Families from across the Gippsland area and Melbourne converged on the town to witness the lights spectacular and discover the region. The Slipway was the centre of attention before the parade began, featuring live music and food trucks, while other areas of the town also enjoyed good trading.
“It was an amazing spectacle and well done to those who organised it,” Lakes Entrance Action and Development Association president Sharen Cameron said.
“We are also thankful for the coverage that put the eyes of Australia onto Lakes Entrance; it is good for the town.”
As a restaurant owner, Ms Cameron reported a booked-out venue for early dining, which then dwindled off quickly later in the night.
“This is understandable as the weather was not conducive to staying around late into the evening,” she said.
Kellie Svetlik from the Brew Bar reported consistent trading, offering warm drinks, hot soup, and rolls.
“It was really good, very consistent. We were happy to open and it was really worthwhile. I hope the event will be back next year,” she said.
Kay Stephenson from Salty Groms was also pleased with the patronage and the way the evening was run.
“It was busy; we put on a special menu and had candlelit dinners,” Ms Stephenson said.
“I think it was the smoothest event yet, well spread out and a good mixture of food trucks and local businesses.”
Although numbers at the Lights Festival were not as massive as last year, The Servo reported up to 400 people throughout the day and evening.
“It was probably a bit quieter during the day but there were lots in the evening,” Bob Morrison said.
“It was great to see all the families come in with their kids all happy with their lanterns shining after the parade. It is all good for the town to have this event.”
The Central Hotel opened earlier for meals on Saturday night and enjoyed custom on par with last year.
“It was a good night; I don’t think the cooler weather put anyone off as there was lots of foot traffic on the streets,” manager Kyle McDonald said.
The Lakes Entrance community and businesses appreciate the hard work the organising committee put into the event, and all are keen to see it remain as a highlight of winter.
