A dedicated group of local residents has partnered with East Gippsland Shire Council officers to deliver a new Draft Master Plan for the Nowa Nowa Foreshore, which is now officially open for public review and feedback.
The draft plan outlines a series of strategic upgrades designed to enhance the popular precinct as a premier destination for both locals and visitors. Long valued for its natural beauty, the foreshore serves as a scenic hub for the town’s Wetlands and Sculpture Walks, as well as a launching pad for boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and swimming.
However, the area has faced severe operational challenges in recent years. Natural closures of the Lake Tyers estuary’s ocean access have triggered recurrent flooding that has damaged local infrastructure, driven down visitor numbers, and impacted the small town’s economy.
To reverse these impacts, initial conversations between Council and community representatives have established a clear list of structural and recreational priorities for the precinct:
– Flood mitigation: Raising ground levels in key visitor zones to reduce flooding severity and maintain public access during high-water events.
– Infrastructure upgrades: Modernizing boating and fishing facilities, including exploring the potential relocation of the town’s boat ramp and installing a dedicated fish-cleaning table.
– Amenity improvements: Enhancing public spaces with upgraded green spaces and better picnic facilities.
– Economic links: Creating stronger physical and visual connections between the foreshore and local business strips to support economic growth.
Because the precinct is heavily subject to periodic inundation, council notes that all proposed improvements will be carefully assessed against detailed flood modelling to ensure that any future works do not negatively impact surrounding properties.
The Nowa Nowa community, regular visitors, and interested regional stakeholders are being urged to review the draft blueprint and share their thoughts before the final master plan is locked in.
The consultation window is open until Friday, July 17. Community members can examine the draft documents and submit their formal feedback through the following channels:
