Wellington Shire residents are being invited to step out into the winter chill and peer deep into the universe as part of a unique stargazing event tapping into Gippsland’s pristine, unpolluted dark skies.
The Cosmic Adventure Night will take place on Friday, July 17, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at 50 Lanigans Road in Maffra West Upper.
The special evening is spearheaded by the Heyfield Adventure Hub, partnering with the expert stargazers from the Latrobe Valley Astronomical Society (LVAS) and local environmental group EcoGipps to deliver an educational, multi-layered experience.
Attendees will embark on a guided tour of the night sky led by LVAS astronomers. Utilising high-powered tracking telescopes, visitors will have the opportunity to get a close-up look at visible planets, distinct winter constellations, deep-space nebulae, and other celestial phenomena, while learning the cultural and scientific history behind the stars.
Alongside the deep-space view, the event will feature indoor educational presentations from the astronomical society, coupled with a brief showcase by EcoGipps detailing their ongoing, boots-on-the-ground conservation efforts to protect Gippsland’s unique terrestrial ecosystems.
To combat the biting mid-July cold, organisers have confirmed that all entry tickets include a hot supper and warm beverages, offering a communal space for attendees to debrief, chat with the astronomers, and connect with fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
Billed as a highly accessible, family-friendly event, the night is tailored equally for seasoned astrophotography buffs and curious amateurs looking to better understand the night sky layout.
