A group of local teenagers is set to depart this week for the 2026 Arthur Grassby Kokoda Scholarship trek, embarking on a life-changing journey designed to test their mettle and build future leaders.
Metung Lions Club representative John Butter Cole recently met with the participants to confirm the club’s sponsorship, joining the RSL and other local organisations in funding the initiative.
The scholarship program is a highly focused, locally sponsored experience that places participants in tough and challenging conditions. By pushing students beyond their comfort zones, the trek is widely recognised for its ability to foster resilience, teamwork and key leadership skills.
In a show of support, Mr Cole wished the group all the best for their impending expedition. He has also invited the trekkers to join the Metung Lions Club at a future dinner meeting to recount their experiences and share the lessons they learned on the trail once they return.
