A successful commemoration of Lakes Entrance Primary School being on its present site was held last Thursday, which was exactly 100 years since it opened on June 25, 1926.

To mark the occasion many past teachers and students joined with the pupils of today to celebrate and enjoy reminiscing their days at the school.

The primary school was originally opened on May 29, 1885 in the historic township of Cunninghame, which was later renamed Lakes Entrance.

The original 1885 school site was located along the Cunninghame Arm of the Reeves River.

It was built to serve the pioneering fishing and port settlement.

Today’s students dressed up in their finest olden day clothes and enjoyed all the activities.

The afternoon began with a school assembly which included principal Simon Prior introducing 90-year-old Lloyd Smith who was a student from 1936 to 1942.

Mr Smith gave present day pupils a glimpse into his school days, including pointing out that if you talked in class, you would get the strap.

He also assisted in giving out awards at the assembly.

Students then headed back to their classrooms to play olden day games and use chalk blackboards.

An anniversary cake made by Tiah Saunders was cut and enjoyed by all students and visitors.

They were also presented with a key ring to mark the occasion.

After visitors viewed the exhibition of photos and memorabilia a delicious afternoon tea, prepared by Kellie Cakes, was served to all those in attendance.

Mr Prior thanked all staff and students who made the day such a successful recognition of Lakes Entrance Primary School’s history.
