It was a lean day at the courts for the Lakes Entrance netballers last Saturday during round nine of the East Gippsland Football Netball League, with the home side managing just one victory from seven games against a powerhouse Wy Yung at the Lakeside Oval.
The sole victory came in the under 17 contest, where Lakes Entrance secured their second win of the 2026 campaign. The determined Seagulls capitalised on turnovers at crucial moments to record a strong 27–18 win, led by standout performances from Lily Eiseman, Sadie Stevens and Emily O’Donnell.
In the “A” grade fixture, the Seagulls delivered a competitive effort but ultimately lacked the poise and class of the Tigers, who look like genuine premiership contenders this season. While momentum swung toward the Seagulls on several occasions, Wy Yung quickly wrestled back control to prevail 56–30. Jesse Gillard, Tommi Carroll and Abbey Yates battled hard for the home side against a slick Tiger outfit.
The “B” grade clash saw the Tigers settle into a match-winning rhythm early. Lakes Entrance was forced into a game of catch-up from the opening whistle to no avail, eventually succumbing 44–18 despite never giving up the challenge behind Meika Pitt and Eiseman.
Wy Yung was far too clinical in “C” grade, running out 35–13 victors, though Kelly Poynton and Mikaela Hooper earned honourable mentions for Lakes.
It was a similar story in “D” grade, where the visitors impressed with a 43–16 victory. The Tigers’ suffocating defensive pressure caused numerous turnovers for a Lakes side that struggled with midcourt connection, though Rebecca Williams and Cassandra Supple were named among the awards for the Seagulls.
The under 15 match was dominated by Wy Yung in emphatic style, finishing 36–8, with Ariana Booth and Evie Kerr giving a good account of themselves for Lakes Entrance.
In the under 13s, the Seagulls managed to retain fourth place on the ladder despite falling 35–9 to the unbeaten, ladder-leading Tigers. Isobel Mills and Sadie Williams worked tirelessly against the premiership favourites to feature in the best players.
Lakes Entrance faces another tough assignment this Saturday when they travel to Boisdale to take on the Bombers at the recreation reserve.
