An innovative comedy production that breaks down barriers between the deaf and hearing worlds through laughter and language learning is set to hit the stage in Stratford later this month.
Acclaimed stand-up comedian and professional sign language interpreter Ben Richardson (pictured) will bring his unique touring show, Deaf Bridges, to the Stratford Courthouse Theatre for a one-night-only event on Saturday, June 27.
The production offers a hilarious and eye-opening glimpse into deaf culture, the realities of teaching Auslan, and the unique experiences of navigating life between two different communities.
As a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult) who grew up with a deaf mother, Auslan is Richardson’s first language. On stage, he simultaneously delivers his razor-sharp routines in both spoken English and Auslan, allowing audiences to see and hear the comedy unfold at the exact same time.
A former national finalist in the prestigious RAW Comedy competition, Richardson has toured his storytelling and quick-witted routines across major festivals and capital cities nationwide.
Far from a passive viewing experience, the show is highly interactive. Throughout the performance, Richardson teaches the audience key elements of sign language, offering theatregoers a fun, practical and laugh-filled introduction to the language.
Critics have praised the production as “fun and informative”, promising that attendees will walk away having learned some of the best Auslan phrases available on the comedy circuit.
Organisers note that while the performance features heavy signing and language concepts, the show is not fully Auslan interpreted.
The event will take place at the Stratford Courthouse Theatre, located at 66 Tyers Street, Stratford. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm showtime. The venue’s onsite Wits End Bar will be operating throughout the evening, serving a selection of locally crafted beers, ciders, and regional wines. Tickets are strictly limited and can be secured online or via the venue booking office.
