Lakes Entrance Tennis Club recently launched a new pilot competition format, wrapping up its first short season last Thursday night with a keenly contested finals series.
For some time, long-standing member James Murphy had been keen to instigate a format that includes singles play. The pilot competition saw four teams of two enter the fray, with matches consisting of a doubles rubber played to eight games and a singles rubber played to six.
Playing for the inaugural, aptly named Murphy Trophy, Ben Evans and Yann Gardin — with the latter filling in for regular player Daryl Murdoch — took out the grand final over James Murphy and Jarryd Clifford.
Third place went to the duo of Jason and Kathryn, who filled in for Wayne Jennings and Warrick Munday, securing a win over Cameron Shegog and Kim Van Kooten.
Following the success of the trial, the club is hoping to build on the momentum of this first season to bring more players on board and continue the high standard of tennis for the upcoming season.
