East Gippsland became the latest hub for a global fitness movement on Sunday, with 220 women of all ages and fitness levels gathering at CrossFit Bairnsdale for the renowned Butterfly Effect competition.
The Butterfly Effect started in Australia in 2015 as a grassroots initiative to create a safe, empowering, and inclusive competition space for women. Since its inception, the single local event has grown into the world’s leading all-female functional fitness festival, uniting tens of thousands of competitors across Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
The unique team-of-three event is built on encouragement rather than comparison, aiming to celebrate the strength of women’s bodies and foster community connection.

Teams tackled four workouts over the course of the day, which had been released months in advance to allow for preparation. The competition catered to all abilities across Hybrid, Intermediate, and Advanced divisions, with the beginner-friendly options focusing on accessible movements rather than complex weightlifting or gymnastics techniques.
The spirit of camaraderie was on full display as first-time competitors and seasoned athletes alike pushed their limits on the competition floor.
At the conclusion of the gruelling day of challenges, the East Gippsland event crowns went to Sios Angels in the Intermediate division, Snatch Pack in the Hybrid division, and the Mediocre Mummies, who took out the Advanced category.
