For the agricultural sector across the sweeping farmland of East Gippsland, the end of the financial year is a pivotal period for operational planning, capital investment, and tax minimisation.
Primary producers from Buchan to Lindenow, Orbost to Bendoc and beyond, are currently sitting down with their agricultural accountants to review their positions, weigh up seasonal income variation, and make crucial procurement decisions before the June 30 cutoff.
A primary driver of farm activity during June is the strategic deployment of capital into depreciating assets. Under current taxation frameworks, local farmers often utilise the final weeks of the financial year to upgrade vital infrastructure or rolling stock.
Purchasing new tractors, upgrading fencing, installing advanced stock watering systems, or investing in livestock handling equipment before July 1 allows primary producers to claim immediate deductions, substantially offsetting high-income seasons.
Additionally, the EOFY period sees local primary producers assessing their Farm Management Deposits (FMDs). This effective tax-concession scheme allows East Gippsland farmers to set aside pre-tax primary production income from prosperous years to draw down during tougher, drier seasons, effectively smoothing out their tax brackets.
With local machinery dealerships and rural supply stores across the region rolling out targeted EOFY promotions, the region’s agricultural community is moving quickly to secure equipment, manage cash flow, and fortify their businesses against future seasonal volatility.
