The Gippsland Lakes Fishing Club continues to attract new members nearly five decades after first forming, with the group focused on encouraging locals of all ages and abilities to get involved in fishing and community activities.
The club has been operating for approximately 47 years and has built a strong reputation as a welcoming social and recreational group within the Lakes Entrance community.
Its clubhouse sits on land provided by East Gippsland Shire Council under a 99-year lease, with the building largely constructed by club members themselves through years of fundraising, raffles and community donations.
Club secretary Trevor Pillinger said the organisation remained strongly community-focused.
“Our major project each year is the Kids/All Abilities Day, with this year’s event attracting more than 150 people,” Mr Pillinger said.
“It is aimed at introducing youngsters and those who may not generally get a chance to learn about fishing, get some free fishing gear and join a friendly, helpful club.”
Mr Pillinger said the event was made possible through support from local businesses, East Gippsland Shire Council and local politicians.
Alongside the annual event, the club regularly runs social fishing competitions, club trips away and social gatherings throughout the year.
“We have a number of locals as members who are only too willing to help anyone who needs a hand fishing our great Gippsland Lakes area,” he said.
While the club historically had a stronger focus on game fishing, Mr Pillinger said the organisation had broadened its focus in recent years toward more accessible fishing experiences.
“The club now has more of a focus towards the ‘bread and butter’ species — the species that are relatively fun and easy for the average person to catch and can provide a feed if you want,” he said. “We also welcome and encourage catch and release.”
